This year at PRINT 13, Braintree Printing owner Jim Corliss and his colleagues were in the market for a newer, faster folding unit. The company purchased a MBO folding machine from Pasquariello Graphics of North.

So, was there any new "breakthrough" in finishing technology presented at PRINT 13? Not really. What we did see were more finishing systems that are better integrated with digital print. This is a trend that has continued over the years as digital printers have gotten faster. Almost all high-volume finishing now starts from the printed roll (or the printer). The goal is to make this an end-to-end solution that can be run by a single operator in the best case.

MBO America will introduce the MBO M80 Flexible Folding System with modular add-on capabilities at PRINT 13 in Chicago. The M80 comes with modular design technology and can be reconfigured after purchase with the capability to add or interchange certain components according to a customer's specific needs.

MBO America has entered into a distribution partnership with IBIS Bindery Systems, the U.K.-based manufacturer of the Smart-binder Plus HS. The Smart-binder Plus HS is the perfect companion to the MBO Digital series of high-speed unwinders, sheeters, and specialty web finishing systems. With the addition of IBIS as a partner, MBO has increased the range of its offerings and strengthened its presence in the digital print and finishing sector.

At PRINT 13, MBO America will be showcasing a new MBO M80 modular folding machine with modular add-on capabilities. Other technologies on display will be a Pop-Up Mailer solution, space-saving Star Wheel Tapper and a DFT 560 with selective fold plates that change fold configurations on-the-fly based on reading a barcode.

MBO America has redesigned its Website with improved features for quick access to detailed product information, including extensive video demonstrations and visuals. Updates include opportunities for customers to find parts, as well as pre-owned equipment online.

It would be fair to say that the combined China-India-Asia print market is now the largest in the world. But the EU firms don't have an easy ride. There are hundreds of local Chinese manufacturers (like JMD Machinery Group) competing fiercely for the business. Still, the bindery is alive and well. It's just that much of it is now in China.
