MARCELINE, MO—Yearbook printing and production specialist Walsworth Publishing has invested nearly $3 million in printing equipment for its facility here, a move that the company expects will provide new jobs and enable it to offer a broader range of products. NEWPORT NEWS, VA—Muller Martini has informed 160 employees of its two Oyster Point production plants that they will close by the end of January 2012, the Newport News Daily Press reported. Muller attributed the move to a sharp decline in business, the newspaper said.
After nearly four decades in Newport News, Muller Martini Manufacturing Corp. is calling it quits. The manufacturer of book binding machinery and other equipment used by publishing companies said Friday that it will close its two Oyster Point production plants by the end of January 2012, resulting in about 160 job losses. The job cuts will come in three phases beginning in July.
Muller attributed the closure to a sharp decline in business that began during the recession and never fully recovered.
"Unfortunately, the worldwide demand for print finishing equipment has not rebounded," the company said
As printers become more specialized, it makes the in-/near-/off-line decision making process clearer. Turnover times and run lengths continue to shorten, but the need for quality hasn't been compromised, prompting many printers to take their finishing functions off-line.
