Open House Event Touts By-the-Book Production HAUPPAUGE, NY—Muller Martini and Nipson recently teamed up to host an open house at Muller Martini’s headquarters on Long Island. The theme for the day was short-run book production using the latest on-demand digital printing and finishing technology. “We see 2007 as a transitional year for digital print manufacturing, during which the industry will fully realize what on-demand technologies are capable of,” noted Robert Stabler, of Nipson America. “The short-run book market will grow very strongly.” According to Stabler, book publishers gain a number of benefits from being able to print lower quantities with digital technology. These include

PRINTERS WHO hitch their star to a particular vertical market put themselves in a vulnerable position, given that market may experience wholesale changes and leave them holding an antiquated bag. By all rights, Motivating Graphics’ obituary should have been written by now. The Ft. Worth, TX-based company primarily aligned with a single market from its outset in 1976, and that vertical experienced major technological shifts that would have shaken loose many vendors like apples from a tree. But, 30 years later, the Clark family—father Ray Sr., son Ray Jr. and grandsons Chris and Tim—are coming off a year in which they invested more than
March 12, 2007—On April 1st, Muller Martini’s hardcover business segment, located in Bad Mergentheim, Germany, will be renamed into Müller Martini Buchtechnologie GmbH (Book Technology Corp.). Muller Martini is the world’s leading manufacturer of print finishing systems. In 1998, Muller Martini acquired the core product used for the manufacture of hardcover books from the former Stahl GmbH and incorporated it into the newly established VBF Buchtechnologie GmbH. Since then, this division has grown significantly. Today, the product range has been expanded to an extent that VBF Buchtechnologie GmbH is able to offer individual and efficient solutions, from stand-alone machines to complete integrated production systems. Since 2001,
MARIETTA, GA—03/12/07—“Our goal is to become a partner with our customers, essentially an extension of their production capabilities...and to do that, we must produce high quality work and meet their deadlines,” says Lisa Weissman, President of QC Bindery & Mailing, Inc. in explaining the main reasons why her company recently installed a Muller Martini BravoPlus T saddle stitcher. “The BravoPlus T was chosen because of the ease of set ups, faster production speed and the 2-up capability. We also added the option of the calendar punch which has been used for several large jobs already,” continues Ms. Weissman. All of those production benefits are
Western States Nabs New Cutter BUTLER, WI—Western States Envelope & Label installed a new Polar 155 XT in its cutting department here, replacing an older model. Since installing the paper cutter a few months ago, the company has experienced less downtime and faster turnaround. These results are important to the success of this 24 hour-a-day plant, which produces more than seven million envelopes each day. Because of these results, Western States’ Ohio division decided to increase its capacity by purchasing a new Polar 155 XT, as well. The company, founded in 1908, has divisions in Wisconsin, Kentucky, Ohio and Minnesota, with more than 700 employees
IT’S NOT that ‘digital’ is an unsavory term around the pressroom at Perfect Printing of Moorestown, NJ. But when their salespeople call upon potential customers, some more choice words are used. “We don’t sell the digital,” notes Joe Olivo, president of Perfect Printing. “We tell customers we can offer improved turnaround times, improved finishing capabilities and even an improved array of products.” Olivo might not be selling digital, but his family owned company recently bought the digital. Perfect Printing acquired Blaze Digital Printing of nearby Lumberton, NJ—a fledgling provider of on-demand booklets that boasted a staff of veteran digital experts. The deal closed the

AMES, IA—2/19/07—As every printing operation recognizes, an important component in business strategy is cost-effectiveness, particularly when considering today’s trend toward shorter run lengths. Ames-based Sigler Printing is increasing its cost-effectiveness in the short- to mid-range market with a Muller Martini Presto saddle stitcher. “We installed the Presto as an add-on piece of equipment,” said Jill Whitaker, Vice President of Operations for Sigler, “and we have been impressed with its quick set-up for smaller runs.” The Presto saddle stitcher features automated menu-guided PLC controls and easy touchscreen operation. “With Presto, make-readies and changeovers can be completed quickly,” continued Whitaker. As a result, Whitaker said, Sigler
New Stitcher Speeds Production PITTSBURGH—Since installing a Muller Martini BravoPlus-T saddlestitcher, Geyer Printing, a Consolidated Graphics company, reports it has gained noticeable improvements in setup times and overall production speed. “We’ve only had the new BravoPlus-T running for a short time, and the ease of makeready has already proven to be a big advantage,” notes Scott Barthelmes, president of Geyer Printing. “The faster run time and operator-friendly print finishing functions also offer great benefits.” Geyer Printing has been a user of Muller Martini finishing machinery for several decades, which lead to the decision to step up to the BravoPlus-T. “Our previous Muller stitcher operated efficiently for
