Domtar says it will permanently close its coated groundwood paper mill in Columbus, MS, and exit this business.

WASHINGTON, DC—The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) imposed preliminary countervailing duties (CVD) on imported coated paper from China and Indonesia to offset subsidies from those governments. Chinese coated paper companies were assessed duties ranging from 3.92 to 12.83 percent, while Indonesia importers were socked with a 17.48 percent duty.

MIAMISBURG, OH—NewPage Corp. has chosen Tom Curley, a 30-year corporate veteran, to take over as president and CEO, effective immediately. Curley began his career with General Electric, and he has worked with organizations such as Caterpillar Inc. and Cooper Cameron. Prior to joining NewPage, Curley served as president of the Rolls-Royce Energy business.

NewPage Corp. has elected Tom Curley, 54, to its Board of Directors and as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately.

MIAMISBURG, OH—Richard Willett, Jr., president and CEO of NewPage Corp., resigned from the company effective Jan. 18, but will remain as a consultant through March 31. Willett has decided to pursue opportunities in other industries. Mark Suwyn, former CEO and current executive chairman, will serve as CEO of NewPage until a replacement is named.

Willett's resignation was effective January 18th, but he will remain with the company as a consultant through March 31, 2010.

For 2010, three big stories will be the end of the recession, the end of black liquor credits, and the proposed anti-dumping and countervailing duties on coated papers from China and Indonesia.
