Less than a dozen printers have been certified by Pantone for having achieved high standards for superior color output, and Think Patented is one of the recent additions to this list. The rare Pantone certification adds to Think Patented’s long list of industry awards, including its certification as both a G7 Master printer and G7 Process Control Master.
Laurie Pressman, VP of the Pantone Color Institute, explains how the color is chosen each year: "The Color of the Year selection requires careful consideration. To distill the prevailing mood into a single hue, the team at the Pantone Color Institute quite literally comb the world looking for future design and color influences, watching out for that one color seen as ascending and building in importance through all creative sectors."
Before finalizing its choice, Pantone takes a look back at all previous selections by laying them out visually, considering how they appear together and revisiting the color messaging of each shade.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, and her team, has selected Pantone 18-1438 Marsala, a naturally robust and earthy wine red color, as the Color of the Year for 2015. "This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors," said Eiseman.
The newly updated Pantone Certified Printer Program for commercial printers and packaging converters creates total quality management based on industry best practices and procedures. The process begins with a Pantone Certified Printer Audit conducted by an X-Rite specialist. The audit process isolates issues that compromise color accuracy and is the basis for the implementation of Standards-Based Procedures.

In the early 1960s, as Lawrence Herbert drove to work in a blue Cadillac with cherry red seats, he mulled over a problem: How to create a “universal language” of color. Herbert, the owner of the Pantone printing company, had just produced a retail display card that helped shoppers choose pantyhose.
The solution, he realized, was to create a unified color system in which each shade was expressed as a number. “If somebody in New York wanted something printed in Tokyo, they would simply open up the book and say, ‘Give me Pantone 123,’ ” Herbert says
The agreement solidifies X-Rite/Pantone’s role as an exclusive provider of color management products and color measurement equipment to the Sotheby’s Imprint Premier Platform print suppliers.
