A major employer in Manchester (NH) has notified the state that it will be closing up shop and taking more than 100 jobs with it. R.R. Donnelley & Sons, based out of Chicago, began telling employees of the news this week.
“We have heard from R.R. Donnelley that they are closing their Manchester location,” said Tara Reardon of New Hampshire Employment Security. “The last date we have for employees is mid-June, and it’s 113 workers that will be displaced.”
R.R. Donnelley did not return calls and emails asking for comment.
Chicago-based R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co. paid its president and CEO $6.1 million last year, 12 percent less than 2010. Thomas J. Quinlan’s annual compensation package included salary, which remained at $1 million; bonuses; stock awards; and retirement plan contributions. The figure fell partly because his cash awards were cut by more than half to $816,000.
R.R. Donnelley has sought to adapt itself to an increasingly digital world in the last eight years. As part of that reorganization, it laid off 2,899 workers in 2011.
Last year, R.R. Donnelley posted loses of $121.1 million…on sales of $10.6 billion.
Donnelley has taken an equity stake in San Francisco-based Real Valuable Corp., maker of the CoffeeTable iPad catalog shopping app. CoffeeTable offers a discovery-based tablet shopping experience for consumers to browse and shop across multiple retailers and provides a comprehensive set of data analytics to help drive retailers’ multichannel marketing strategies.
R.R. Donnelley plans to close its printing plant in Mendota, IL, and lay off its 207 employees by the end of May. Donnelley acquired the plant in 1992 as part of its purchase of magazine printer Combined Communication Services.
Nearly two-thirds of the 150 attendees at the 2012 Digital Book Printing Forum were publishers and printers. According to Gilles Biscos, president of INTERQUEST, “Shorter print runs, better inventory management, and the growing popularity of eBooks are changing the supply chain for printed books.”
There are dozens of companies like R.R. Donnelley & Sons (RRD). It calls out to investors these days because Donnelley’s dividend yield is an incredible 8%. The printer has lost money four out of the last five years, largely because of giant charges to write off assets, send workers packing and reduce the carrying value of once valuable businesses.

Donnelley reported a fourth-quarter net loss of $326.7 million, including pre-tax charges totaling $483.9 million, on net sales of $2.7 billion. “Although demand softened during the last few months of the year, we are pleased with the $695 million of operating cash flow less capital expenditures that we generated in 2011,” said Thomas J. Quinlan III, RR Donnelley’s president and CEO
