CHICAGO—RR Donnelley has been awarded a $375 million, multiyear agreement to provide college textbook printing, graphic management services, packaging, on-demand printing and other services to Cengage Learning. Cengage Learning will draw on Donnelley’s domestic and international capabilities to help it deliver highly-customized learning solutions for colleges, universities, instructors, students, libraries and other users under a portfolio of well known company and imprint brands that include Brooks/Cole, Course Technology, Delmar, Gale, Heinle, Schirmer, South-Western and Wadsworth.

Donnelley has agreed to fork over roughly $481 million, or $11.50 a share, to obtain financial printer Bowne & Co.
CHICAGO—Perhaps RR Donnelley decided it didn’t want to be left out of the printing industry’s M&A renaissance period. North America’s largest printer reached deep into its coffers to set into motion the third blockbuster industry transaction since the beginning of this year.
Bowne, headquartered in New York, had revenues of approximately $675 million during 2009. The agreement has been approved by the Boards of Directors of both companies.
CHICAGO—Penton Media has filed a prepackaged plan of reorganization under Chapter 11, the publisher announced on Tuesday. The parent company of American Printer and Paper, Film & Foil Converter magazines, Penton is saddled with more than $1 billion in liabilities. Its assets fall between $500 million and $1 billion, according to court documents.
The largest trade debt creditor was magazine printer Worldcolor, which was listed as being owed $1.59 million. Next came fellow printer R.R. Donnelley, which is owed $1.41 million. Other notable creditors include Hallmark Data Systems ($532,661.38), Brown Printing ($207,814.64), ON24 ($114,577), QuadGraphics ($81,885.48) and direct marketing media company Walter Karl ($63,273.72).
