So, was there any new "breakthrough" in finishing technology presented at PRINT 13? Not really. What we did see were more finishing systems that are better integrated with digital print. This is a trend that has continued over the years as digital printers have gotten faster. Almost all high-volume finishing now starts from the printed roll (or the printer). The goal is to make this an end-to-end solution that can be run by a single operator in the best case.
At PRINT 13, Standard Finishing Systems, together with partners Horizon and Hunkeler, will unveil the Smart Binding System, a new lean book manufacturing process that solves many of the challenges inherent in short-run, roll-fed and cut-sheet book production.

Standard Finishing Systems partner Hunkeler reported another successful Innovationdays event in Lucerne, Switzerland last month. Integrated total solutions from software to finished product spanned the hall with a special focus on uptime, productivity, and ease-of-use. During the opening day press conference, Hunkeler also announced positive business results for 2012 and further expansion of its Wikon headquarters.
Standard Finishing Systems has announced two new installs—a new Standard Horizon VAC-1000 collator and ST-40 inline stacker at SpringDot of Cincinnati; and a Standard Horizon BQ-270V automated perfect binder and Standard Horizon HT-30C automated three-side trimmer at Usherwood Office Tehnology's Syracuse, NY location.
After a welcome from Dscoop officials (all sporting bad toupees with ponytails), a bluegrass band gave an appropriate Tennessee greeting by getting the crowd to sing along to Rocky Top, a state anthem. Then keynote speaker Mark King, CEO of TaylorMade gave an uplifting and humorous talk that detailed how he and his team developed a vision to become the best performance golf brand in the world, then followed through with it.
Some 80 exhibitors are expected to present their latest products in over 75,000 square feet of exhibition space at Hunkeler innovationdays, from Feb 11-15, 2013, at the Messe Lucerne exhibition facility, in Lucerne, Switzerland. Integrated total solutions will be demonstrated to address every aspect of workflow, within every industry segment.
Standard Finishing will highlight new additions to its feeding and finishing portfolio at GRAPH EXPO, with new products and accessories surrounding the professional production and distribution of digitally and offset printed documents. A diverse set of Standard Hunkeler and Standard Horizon paper handling and finishing solutions will also be shown in partnership with industry-leading digital print manufacturers.
McArdle has installed the Océ ColorStream 10000 Flex web press with in-line Standard Hunkeler UW6 unwinder, CS6 rotary cutter and Standard Horizon StitchLiner 6000 digital saddlestitcher, making it the first installation of its kind to blend these best-of-breed technologies from Océ and Standard Finishing Systems.
