EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ—Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of an explosion last Tuesday that sent seven Sun Chemical workers to area hospitals, including three who were treated at a regional burn center, The Bergen Record reported.
The explosion happened as workers were mixing chemicals inside the Sun Chemical plant, according to police. East Rutherford Fire Department Assistant Chief John Giancaspro said the workers were mixing carbon and vegetable oil used in newspaper ink for the New York Times, and they are unsure why it exploded.
A law enforcement source tells NBC 4 New York that the fire and chemicals spread after another worked grabbed a fire extinguisher to put out the flames from the mixing vat. As the worker used the extinguisher, the contamination was spread from the original two workers to three more.
