HUNT VALLEY, MD—The Sheridan Group plans to consolidate the printing operations of two of its subsidiary publications businesses into a single facility. The printing operations of United Litho located in Ashburn, VA, will be consolidated into Dartmouth Printing’s facility in Hanover, NH. According to the Washington Business Journal, 80 jobs will be eliminated as a result.

While many magazine and catalog printers have reported some improvement in their sectors since 2009, economic and industry uncertainty still carried its weight into 2010. It's hard to believe that Monday's Printing Impressions/RIT Printing Industry Hall of Fame awards ceremony held during Graph Expo in Chicago marked the 25th anniversary of the Hall of Fame. An award created when I assumed the role of editor-in-chief in 1985 to recognize individual industry achievement, this year's induction class was certainly worthy of our important silver anniversary milestone.
The nine-unit Goss Sunday 2000 press is to be installed in early 2011 at the web printer specializing exclusively in journal, magazine and catalog production. “We are replacing older capacity with another advanced Sunday press ideally suited for our specialized, makeready intensive environment,” explains Jack Elliott, vice president of operations.
Sheridan Books has expanded its existing digital print-on-demand offering, Digital Print Advantage, to include four-color text printing to both softcover and hardcover binds. An increased page count range has also been added, as well as new trim sizes.
Ask anyone who knows Joan Davidson, and they will tell you that she has a lot on the ball—an excellent work ethic, top-notch people skills, a strong manager and a positive leader. But she'll be the first to admit that when it comes to patience...well, let's just say she's still working on that.
