Revenues increased 4 percent in the first quarter of 2011, from $511.6 million to $530.1 million, primarily due to a number of new printing contracts. Adjusted operating income increased 5 percent, from $47.3 million to $49.8 million, representing the seventh consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth.

For fiscal 2010 as a whole, the company says it had the best operating performance in its history, including growth: of 16.3 percent in adjusted operating income, of 18.7 percent in adjusted net income applicable to participating shares, and from a loss of $82.3 million to a gain of $166.6 million in net income applicable to participating shares.

MONTREAL—Transcontinental announced that it is closing the Boucherville printing plant before the end of the year. The closure, scheduled for Dec. 17, will result in the loss of 180 employees.
Some 180 employees will be affected when the plant closes on Dec. 17, 2010. “Today, because of the major structural changes in the printing industry that have led to decreased demand in certain niche markets, Transcontinental is faced with overcapacity in the book, catalogue and magazine segment of its print network,” said Jacques Grégoire, senior vice president, Magazine, Book and Catalogue Group.
