The discipline you have in leading your business plays a significant role in what you can accomplish. Top performers often set quarterly goals and milestones, and are relentless in completing them on time. They avoid bouncing from one project to the other and not completing assigned tasks. But what if your business doesn’t operate that way today? How can you change the way you run the business?
The culture of your business can include what is acceptable behavior and what is not. And while not written, it can also spell out the appetite for change that your team is both capable of, and willing to embrace. We all have a “an internal governor” that throttles our acceptable rate and pace of change. And while I’m not sure if it’s a fixed level, or can be modified, the pace that exists today is what you’ve got to work with.
If your company “eats change for breakfast,” then modifying your trajectory may not be that much of an issue. If you are on the other end of the spectrum and abide by the “change is fine, as long as it doesn’t affect me” model, than any modifications may be met with some resistance.
Begin with a clear understanding of where your culture is today and how you’ve done in tackling new initiatives and projects. What’s working and what doesn’t work in how you get things done. With a good baseline of understanding, you’ll be capable of incrementally changing course without creating self-inflicted impediments.
