Up until the point he was injured, the Boston Red Sox had a second baseman named Dustin Pedroia. Petey, as he was called by his teammates, was not the stereotypical candidate for the sport (or just about any sport for that matter). He was undersized, not known for speed, and I think the bat weighed more than he did.
What Pedroia did have was drive. No one outworked him.
When I think of the kind of sales rep that I want to be, Pedroia's name always comes to mind. I admire his work ethic and how he made up for the lack of natural gifts by practicing harder than anyone else. I strive to emulate the lessons of Pedroia and those like him to make up for any gaps in my skill set as a sales rep and coach.
You are likely not the best sales rep in the world.
You are possibly not the best rep in the office.
I guarantee your prices are not the lowest available.
There is no line out the door of customers waiting to gain your favor and earn the right to place an order with you.
As such, you need a strategy if you are to succeed. Here’s one…
Out-work…
Out-hustle…
Out-learn…
Out-improve…
Out-care…
Out-everything the competition.
Imagine hearing yourself say to a prospective customer, “You will find lower prices out there. There is always someone willing to be cheap. However, you will never find anyone who will work harder to earn your business. You will never find someone more appreciative of the work. And nowhere will you come across someone whose goal it is to work with you for ten years and beyond. That is my promise to you.”
You might not be the best sales rep in the world, so strive to be the best sales rep you are capable of being.
