Yesterday’s sales tip started a theme that’s going to run all week. It had to do with understanding some of the newer productivity and workplace tools like Miro, Asana, and Slack.
You see, guys like me — 60-year-olds — not only don’t use these tools but until recently, had never heard of them.
This Friday, in my weekly Chill with Bill noon ET event, I am going to share what I know about these apps in the hopes that others are introduced to their value the way I was when I became the voice of Bunch.
So, while yesterday’s tip was for legacy/veteran salespeople, today’s blog is for you, the under 40-year-olds who think they are all that and a bag of chips because they’ve heard the phrase “all that and a bag of chips" for years now while others are seeing it for the first time and saying, “That Bill Farquharson. He’s so funny.”
You know better.
This week, I’m hoping to get my contemporaries up to speed. But today, I want to talk to the younger crowd about a couple of things that we do get right.
First, manners.
If you don’t know:
- The proper way to shake hands;
- Why you should say “You’re welcome” or “My pleasure” instead of “No problem";
- Or, the value of thanking a client for an order;
Watch a YouTube video and learn some basic manners. It matters.
Second, common courtesies:
- If you say you’re going to do something, do it.
- Arrive on time.
- Call from a quiet environment.
- Smile and look interested.
- Apologize and own it.
- Keep your listening-to-talking ratio at no less than 5:1.
- Respect your elders.
Your generation has advantages, but you don’t know everything. We may come to you for help with an iPhone, but you would do well to observe how we carry ourselves, too.
Soon enough, it will be you writing blogs complaining about young people. Until then, watch and listen. You just might learn something.
