We boast about multi-tasking as we are half-listening to a colleague. Our task lists continue to grow, and the reminders notification indicator is flashing red. The list of completed items pales in comparison to the to-do list. Considering all of this, it may be time to take a step back and reassess our objectives and whether we are actually getting anything done.
In sales, we like to talk about how many new customers we’ve landed, but in reality, how many new accounts have you landed? Jobs are not the same as accounts. In team meetings there seems to be a buzz about all the to-do’s that need to be added to the list. But how much time is spent celebrating the items on the completed list? While I have no research to prove it, I’d bet that our business lives seem to resemble our personal lives with the busyness of the day taking over the calendar.
I get that we are in a fast-paced world with new challenges and opportunities landing on our desk faster that the planes at O’Hare. But moving fast and being effective are two different things.
It’s never been more important to have a sharp toolset that is built for today, and not for a time that once was. Keeping up to date with how to manage multiple spinning plates has become table stakes for most leaders. Some of the best leaders though are adapt at spinning fewer plates, but making sure they are the most impactful ones.
Our management styles will be put to the test as the rate and pace of change continues to increase. Making the time to work on our business is the only way to break through the fog and take our business to the next level. Evaluate where you are spending your time, look at the activities, the results, and the impact to your business. If it meets your approval – great. If not, it’s time to refocus and work to keep the main thing the main thing.
