We all do it.
Someone says something like, “Ugh, I hurt my back,” and you respond, “Oh, I hurt my back a month ago playing golf. Took me three weeks to recover. I can still feel it. In fact …”
Blah, blah, blah ….
So what?
So, what about empathy? What about listening? What about showing sincere care for someone else and not responding with a comment that one-up’s the other person?
Dale Carnegie told us people most want to talk about themselves. So, let them! Instead of filling the air with the sound of your voice, show interest.
Say, “How did that happen?”
Say, “Are you in a lot of pain?”
Say anything that exudes interest in the other person. Way too many people disregard others with tales of their own. Be different. Be curious. Be quiet.
This will make you wealthy and wise …
… not to mention popular.
