One benefit of a new Star Wars release is that they replay the first 300 (okay, seven) episodes on television. And, despite the fact that Spike TV riddles each with countless and repetitive commercials, we who grew up with this series (the original came out when I was a high school senior) pause while going through the channels to take in a few scenes.
Although the "Family Guy" parody of "The Empire Strikes Back" is infinitely more entertaining, it’s in this sequel that we are introduced to Yoda. One particular line caught my eye recently and it reminded me of the power of a positive sales attitude...
Luke has landed on a desolate planet where he meets the Jedi Master. Full of doubt and negativity, he hangs onto his long-held beliefs about how things should be. Because he parked illegally in a red zone, his winged star fighter sinks into the swamp and he unsuccessfully attempts to use the Force to pull it out of the water (AAA doesn’t go to Dongooey, apparently). “You want the impossible,” he tells Yoda. Yoda sighs and then raises a palm/claw/hand/thingy and the aircraft rises from the muck and is set down gently next to an astonished Luke who gushes with wide eyes, “I don’t believe it.” Yoda then delivers the money line:
“That is why you fail.”
Henry Ford famously said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” There are so many parts to the job of sales that we cannot control but the belief that if we make a high-value sales call to the right target market applying a prospecting process with diligence and pleasant persistency, that it will result in successful and profitable sales 100% of the time, is one of the things we can control.
Believe it.
