So as it turns out, it looks like the gym might be the ONLY place I am getting any thinking done, and since I am TRYING to get back into the habit of writing each week, here I am, writing about my brain on the gym (AGAIN).
So here are a few more thoughts for you:
Something is better than nothing — There are times when I might only have 20 minutes to get some exercise. I know that studies show that people get maximum results from 60 minutes of exercise when they do work out. But, you know what? I’ll take it when and where I can get it. So if your goal is to make 10 calls, but you only have 10 minutes until you have to leave for the day, sit down. Make two calls. It’s really better than zero.
Leave things a little better than you found them — This is "being a human person sharing space with everyone" kind of thing. When I get off of a piece of equipment, I clean it REALLY well. It takes me an extra 20 seconds. And I am satisfied to know that I share space well and care about the experience of others. The same goes for workspaces, doesn’t it? Your break room, the restrooms, any shared space. Be a human! Clean up! It might be the biggest workspace-running joke, right — the state of the workplace microwave and the stealing of other people’s stuff out of the fridge. Just once, clean that microwave. And maybe bring in some treat with a note on it that says, "FREE FOR ALL!" Nice human!
Even if you get distracted or side-tracked, get yourself back on track and finish what you started— Stuff happens. I get it. You get called into production for your opinion on a press problem at the exact time that you had slotted to make calls. A chatty client calls you on the morning you had set aside to research new prospects. That will happen. You just ride with it and refocus. When you come back from the pressroom, sit back down, take a moment, and pick the phone back up. When you hang up with your chatty customer/friend, you get back on Google and find yourself more prospects. Don’t just throw it all away because of a little detour. Remember that what you were doing, you were doing for a REASON, and it was an IMPORTANT reason. New business matters to you. It matters a lot. Don’t get led astray.
Results might happen slowly, but they will happen — We are such an instant gratification society, we expect results IMMEDIATELY. Well, I am sorry to tell you this, but progress happens slowly sometimes. I have been lifting weights for almost three months now, and I am only now seeing that I might be ready to move up one brick of weight. That is OK. I am stronger, healthier and moving in the right direction. In the same vein, making calls for one day may not result in a new customer by the end of the week. But, research and calls consistently and strategically executed for three months ABSOLUTELY will result in new customers. I guarantee it.
OK, next week I promise I will move on to another topic. Thanks for indulging me and my gym obsession!
